The history of our Journal

The Journal was organized in 1958. In USSR by this time after post-war reconstruction of the national economy significantly increased the number of postgraduate and graduate students of metallurgical universities, also increase in number of scientific research and protection candidate and doctoral dissertations was marked. There was an urgent need to consult the scientific community of the country with the latest achievements of our scientists, to discuss the results. These tasks applied to the steel industry leaded to the opening of a new journal.

From the first issues the journal published the works of famous scientists of the country. Besides articles reflecting the scientific and technical research results on a wide range of scientific problems, the journal regularly published generalized scientific materials in certain areas, information of conferences and reviews of the most important scientific works.

First editors in chief Professor Nazarov I.S., Filippov S.I., Grigoryan V.A. laid the tradition of high standards for published materials, objectivity in their evaluation and attracting the authors representing different schools. The most authoritative scientists were part of the editorial board, reviews of proposed articles were actively discussed at the meetings of the editorial board.

From the first issue "Izvestiya VUZov. Chernaya metallurgiya = Izvestiya. Ferrous Metallurgy" began to play a decisive role in promoting research work in metallurgy and related industries.

The role of the journal publishing articles on priority directions of science is great. The appearance of new scientific areas expanded the scope of publications.

To familiarize the reader with the latest achievements of science and technology in the field of metallurgy and materials science journal published the so-called custom-review article . Their authors tend to be large and well-known scientists and industrials. These articles are very popular among readers and significantly raise the rating of the journal.

In 1995 the journal introduced the section "Brief Communications" for the publication of articles of no more than two pages. These articles have independent scientific value, characterized by novelty and originality. Brief reports are reviewed by the editorial board members directly and published as soon as possible – during two or three months. Such method is particularly popular among the publication of post-graduate students.

In connection with the transition of higher education into a two-tier system of education a lot of attention is given to the publication of teaching materials for a new system of universities.

High demands on the quality of incoming materials to the journal leads to a reduction in the number of rejected articles. Within half a century the journal, without changing its traditions, is worthy in its pages in the best scientific developments in ferrous metallurgy and related areas. Due to the high rating Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science journal invariably includes the list of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications, which should be published in major scientific results of dissertations for the degree of doctor and candidate of sciences.

Time makes new and higher requirements for the content and method of supplying scientific information. Today the journal "Izvestiya VUZov. Chernaya metallurgiya = Izvestiya. Ferrous Metallurgy" becomes different to respond to the challenges of time. Expanding the scope of the publications of foreign authors, abstracts of articles published in Russian and English languages. In the near future an electronic version of the journal will be issued bilingual. Now the journal is being prepared to be included in one of the international databases.

Significantly the editorial board of the journal was renewed. Now it includes operating reputable scientists, industrial workers, representatives of employers and well-known foreign scientists .

We are convinced that in the coming years, the journal is quite capable to become one of the leading scientific and technical world-class publications.
